Grant Money For Nursing Students

Nursing will always be a profession with high demand and few people actually working in this field. That’s why the US Department of Health and Human Services is giving away grant money for nursing students. However, these are mostly scholarships and loan repayment programs. The real gold nuggets are state-funded grants.

38 US states try vigorously to better the conditions in the flagging nursing profession. Not only do they use their funds to help nursing students but they also buy new equipment and other resources. In addition to that there are also minority grant programs. Arizona State University for example offers money especially to Native American students in the nursing field.

If you know which field you will be specializing in there is an even greater source of grant money for nursing students: professional organizations and corporations. Here are some examples: The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the Emergency Nurses Foundation Association, the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the Gerontological Society of America all offer excellent grants and scholarships for students specializing in their field.

Pell Grant For Graduate Students

The Pell Grant is one of the largest sums of money the US government gives away to undergraduate students. Sadly there is no Pell Grant for graduate students. Luckily there are some alternatives and ONE exception.

If you are working on a post-baccalaureate program leading to a teaching certificate you may be eligible. Check the Federal Student Aid handbook for more information. If your school offers a four year schooling degree you won’t get a Pell Grant nevertheless. Here are some alternatives to the Pell Grant for graduate students.

  • National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant): If you’re pursuing a degree in technology, physics, life or computer sciences, mathematics or engineering and have at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average than you may be eligible for a SMART Grant and receive up to $4,000 per year.
  • A student aid program for undergraduates as well as graduates is the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant). One of the obligations to receive this grant is that you serve yourself as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students.

These two are the biggest grants for graduate students. If you do some more research (maybe on this site ;-) or ask the federal aid office at your school you will find a lot more loans and work programs which could also help secure your graduate studies in regards to money.

In almost all cases you have to fill out an application form. You should answer the questions truthful. You will have to include a bank statement. Also keep  a copy of your travel insurance certificate available.

Don’t wait until the last day to submit everything. In most cases a document, statement or other piece of information is missing and you don’t want to be denied because you couldn’t get it quick enough.

And by the way: If you are already getting financial aid from your university you can use this for your student travels. So for most students it could pay off to apply for a standard student grant and then use this one for your travels.
